V. Substitution in Soccer
A. How:
When a team makes a substitution, the departing player must exit the field across the nearest touchline. Under supervision of a match official, players entering the game must enter the field at the halfway line. All substitutions are up to the discretion of the Referee. All substitutes will wear colored vests to signify that they are subs and not players. (Oct. 2011)
B. When:
1. A team may substitute when it has possession.
2. Should the team in possession make a substitution, then their opponent may also make a substitution, but it must be immediate and without any time delay. A team may make substitution when play is stopped for an injury, regardless of who will have possession once play resumes. (Oct. 2011)
3. Any team that does not have possession may never initiate substitution.
4. After goals and at halftime, teams may substitute.
